I had never heard of this book before hearing of the recent well-loved and highly rated TV series of the same name. Once I realised there was a book I decided, of course, to read it first.
Now I really am surprised I have never heard of the book before! It is a great novel and a classic 'hard to put downer'. The protagonist Beth is a genius from a young age and soon gets hooked on chess and powers up the rankings. She has a socially awkward, selfish and cold side too, yet that won't stop you from willing her to win. The book is thrilling and funny, especially the character of her mom Mrs. Wheatley, who can hardly believe how brilliant her child is.
If you're going to watch the series, it is essential that you read this book first. It should be stated that you don't need to know much about chess in order to be able to enjoy the book and the series.
It is extremely interesting to note that the author also wrote 'The Hustler' and 'The Color of Money' - both adapted into great movies!
