A good book in that it's super difficult to put down! I really wanted to know what was going to happen at the end. Surprised by the amount of sex in the book, some of it a bit naughty! And also surprised to find that it was really a horror story, not the romance book I imagined it was.
However the ending was rather far-fetched and the whole premise too. A great book to read while traveling or on holiday but it's not going to win any literary awards. However, for this genre, it is better written than most and flows really well.
It is a suspenseful novel that explores the darker side of humanity. The story follows Lowen Ashleigh, a struggling writer who is hired to complete the final three books in a successful series after the original author, Verity Crawford, is left in a vegetative state following a car accident. Lowen begins to work in Verity's home and discovers a manuscript that reveals the author's true thoughts and actions, including some disturbing details about her family. A kind of autobiography.
The author creates a sense of unease throughout the story. The plot is full of twists and turns that keep the reader guessing until the very end. I tried to guess the ending but I couldn't! The character of Verity is particularly well-crafted, as her presence looms large over the narrative despite the fact that she is unable to communicate. The mystery surrounding her true motivations and intentions is a driving force of the plot.
However, the novel does have its flaws. One of the main issues is that the plot relies heavily on some improbable coincidences and plot contrivances. The twists feel forced and overly convenient.
The novel deals with themes of violence, abuse, and trauma, which may not be suitable for all readers. Some of the scenes are quite graphic, and the book could be triggering for those who have experienced similar traumas. 7/10 rating.
