Book Review : Catch-22 by Joseph Heller

Firstly I want to say that I always thought this was some kind of Thriller. I mean everyone has heard of the 'word' Catch-22, to be caught in a tight spot. And since this book invented this expression (did it?) I just had it in my head that it was some kind of spy thriller.

Anyway it isn't. It's actually a very weird book about some pilots in the army who have to fly a certain number of missions and some of them pretend to be sick to get out of it. And the Captain keeps increasing the number of missions. Honestly after the first half a dozen chapters I was like fuck this shit, I can't understand a goddamn scene and it's boring and there are too many characters with baffling names. Yossarian... What the hell? Anyway, I persevered as it's one of the 'greatest novels of the 20th century' and in the end I'm glad I did.

It's actually a kind of black comedy. All the characters are complete fools and buffoons and simpletons apart from Yossarian who is quite conniving and pretty cool.

Along the way you meet a lot of weirdness that gets really funny. Some of the chapters are laugh out loud.

Just don't expect a Thriller! And stick with it!
