I bought this book on the strength of the reviews and that I love a good time travel yarn. I wish I hadnt wasted 2 weeks reading this book... well at least the charity shop might be happy!! The first few chapters were decent, at least in terms of excitement. The next 500 pages or so were just mind-numbing... nothing actually really happened. And the cliches!! Let me give an example . The first sentence of chapter 27 and I quote "We ate like wolves at supper, retired to a large airy bedroom and slept like logs." I rest my case.
Incidentally I found out there is a TV series so I watched the first season. It was much better than the book! The characters were way more interesting, apart from Claire who was pretty dull. Bad casting probably.
Tobias Menzies is brutal as Jonathan "Black Jack" Randall. The gay rape scene is not for the faint hearted. The heterosexual scenes are much more up my aisle, so to speak. Wee forest anyone?
